Since 1924

The setting up of the company came about as a result of the existence of good clay deposits as far as Coja, to the northeast. At the time, spread around the area, there were 7 or 8 intermittent kilns in the open air, with their respective drying areas. Each season these produced good canal roof tiles, thanks to the characteristics of the raw material used.

The existence of clay and the quality of the majority of the products, which were famous even far from Coja, led a group of entrepreneurs to set up the firm in 1924 and to make their base at a place called "Meda da Carriça”, where it still remains today. This is the reason the company was called "Carriça".

In 1929 the company was re-launched and developed. Investments were made in new facilities, in machinery and in a new Hoffman kiln, which was built in stages. In 1930/1931 the factory changed from steam power to electricity. Since 1930 the company has not ceased to grow, highlighting the enterprising spirit which brought about the foundation of other companies, including the branch in Mortágua (1940) and the Argus, Lda. ceramics factories in Taveiro, Coimbra (1945).

In late 1939 the manufacture of Lusa tiles was begun.

Throughout its entire history, the strong social integration of Carriça in the region has been notable, making it one of the main poles of industrial development.

During its 80 years of tradition in the manufacture of ceramics, the company has placed particular emphasis on the exchange of ideas and solutions with economic agents and in technological modernisation, keeping up with the state of the art for the sector of manufacture of ceramic building supplies, in this particular case that of ceramic roofs.
